Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The Austrian theatre landscape until 1918 was comprised not only of standing theatres, there were many ambulatory troups which performed in many different towns for shorter or longer periods in varied localities. These troups brought theatre to out-of-the-way towns. Up to now an extensive catalog of these localities does not exist.
Using as a point of departure a list of over 300 towns where theatre is known to have been performed, the course participants will use railway lines, postal and ship routes to determine additional towns where theatre may have been performed. Thereafter they will locate where the localities where theatre was performed (name, dates, location, number of seats, perhaps groundplan or pictures/illustrations), information about the town (number of inhabitants, infrastructure, transportatioin connectioins, newspapers, additional hotels and restaurants). Furthermore they will locate information where material about the local theatre can be found (libraries, archives, museums).

Assessment and permitted materials

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The results of the research will be used to create a reference work: Austrian Theatres. The students are to learn how to use various, not only theatre-related sources in order gain insight into the theatre practice and landscape of the 19th century.
