Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course will first offer a survey of American and Austrian "visionary" film history. Initial emphasis will be on the canonical figures of each respective movement. During the semester we will trace the development of the two country's underground film movements, while paying special attention to the various instances of overlap, collaboration and exchange. We will also examine the systems of production, venues for exhibition, and methods of distribution that the both movements depended on. From there we will move to a discussion about the present situation of experimental media production and exhibition both in the U.S.A. and Austria.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students must complete at three critical response papers to one (or more) of the films/ topics covered in class. A final longer paper research paper (4-6 pages) will be required at the end of the course.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

During the course students will both gain an understanding of the history of Austrian and American experimental film and the tools necessary to critically analyze a film.

Examination topics

Attendance for the course is mandatory.
