Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The introduction to the core course "Film and TV Analysis" will make participants familiar with the theoretical framework of film analysis as well as the various methods and the technical terminology used in this field. In the later stages, the course will focus on qualitative methods of film and TV analysis and discuss individual areas of analytical concern that are illustrated by practical examples in greater detail. Students will be asked to form work groups concentrating on these individual areas, such as narrative concepts, camera, montage, sound (dialogue, room atmosphere, music, etc), colour and mise-en-scene. They will be invited to apply qualitative methods and the terminology inherent in film analysis. To this end, course participants will have to choose a film from a predefined list and prepare a presentation of their analytical results. The course will, furthermore, take into consideration the diverse approaches to film creation depending on the region and its respective media culture.
