Aims, contents and method of the course
Die Überblicksvorlesung bietet Informationen an über den Zeithintergrund, ferner über die - häufig nur spärlich dokumentierten - Lebenverläufe sowie die sozialen und künstlerischen Vernetzungen der bedeutenden Dramatiker und Theaterleute der Ära von Queen Elizabeth I. (1558-1603) und King James I. (1603-1625), darunter Thomas Kyd, Christopher Marlowe, Ben Jonson, Thomas Middleton, John Webster, William Shakespeare, Philip Henslowe, Edward Alleyn, Richard Burbage,Inigo Jones. Auf der Grundlage neuester Forschungsergebnisse werden die unterschiedlichen Quellen (Dramentexte, Gemälde, Stadtpanoramen, archäologische Funde, Gerichtsprotokolle...) ausgewertet, um das Verstehen der Werke zu ermöglichen und Einsicht in die Theaterpraxis zu erlangen. Als ein besonderer Schwerpunkt ist die Thematik Theater und (Ohn-) Macht vorgesehen.
