Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In the courses belonging to module 'analysis', students (according to the bachelor curriculum TFM) "examine staged scenes in theatre, film and media" and acquire the competence to "analytically describe aesthetic experience using technical terms and academic methods". Accordingly, the terms and methods that are suited to the analysis of media are at the heart of this practical course in media analysis.
For the identification of an appropriate approach, it is crucial to define from which medium - or mediality - one may assume to depart. Where is the difference between television and film? What is the notion of audiovisual media based on and how do these related to time-based media? What are the challenges presented by digital, networked media? And most importantly: How do I as a researcher do the present (or elusive) material do justice and what can I do to open the steps of my analysis to scrutiny (e.g. to the scrutiny of the readers of my coursework)?

Assessment and permitted materials

Course-inherent. The precise assessment modalities will be communicated in the first seminar on October 20, 2009, as well as on the eLearning platform. As this course has been rated with 5 ECTS credit points, a total amount of 125 (i.e. 25 times 5) work hours is to be expected, including seminar hours.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The goal of this is course is to make students acquainted with the instruments of media analysis (beyond film and theatre) through the means of exemplary analyses, and to enable them to conduct future media analyses independently (esp. as part of their course work).

Examination topics

Input from the tutor and analytical exercises as part of the course activity, independent reading and solving of analytical tasks outside of the course activity. Moodle is used as an eLearning platform.
Attending first seminar is obligatory.
