Aims, contents and method of the course

Dance, my puppets. On theories of theatre.

Taking as ist parting point on one hand the metaphor of theatre, on the other hand the theatrical interaction with puppets and objects, the class offers an introduction to central theories of theatre as well to theorizing theatre and its wider social and anthropological implications.

The class will offer summaries in English to accomodate non-German speakers.

Assessment and permitted materials

participation in class beyond physical presence
+ oral effort (presentation)
+ individual written effort (essay, paper, excerpt, statement)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Introduction to theories of theatre; reading of core texts.
An approach to the semantic field of puppet/mask/figure/body.
Discussion of subject strategies in relation to theatre.

Examination topics

reading, analysis, debate.

A summary of relevant literature and readings will be available through Moodle.
