Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Only a precise use of terms makes it possible to describe and reflect on the diversity of theatrical forms (performance, dance, drama, opera, show, ritual, event, street scene, etc.) in terms of form, dynamics or function. One difficulty here is the fact that not only the phenomena, but also the terms used to describe and evaluate theatrical phenomena are subject to historical change. This is particularly true for the term "theatre" itself, which is why academic texts sometimes include definitional phrases for the sake of determining the subject matter, while on the other hand it is not uncommon to write about "the" theatre without clarifying what exactly is meant by it.
On the basis of texts from the last decades as well as three practical examples, students learn 1. to know and distinguish between different theatre or performance terms, 2. to deal precisely with theatre-theoretical terms (role, as if, reality, interaction, oeuvre, process, play etc.), 3. to read theatre studies texts carefully and to reflect on their theatre or performance terms, 4. to argue in a theoretically well-founded way in relation to performances and different theatre forms. - Overall, the proseminar aims at dealing with the plurality of theatre terms.

Assessment and permitted materials

Required achievements for the completion of the course are:
- Participation in the introductory and organisational session.
- Continuous reading and elaboration of the texts and practical examples on the basis of written instructions, individually as well as in a study group
- The submission of two texts (both 750 words plus/minus 10% = approx. 2 A4 pages) which serve to answer a key question. The writing and editing of these texts is supported by writing assistants.
- Completion of a written exam at the end of the semester
