170131 PS Introductory Seminar "Theatre Theory" (2024S)

Continuous assessment of course work

(z.B. Übung "Medientheorie" mit Schreibwerkstatt)

Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The variety of theatrical forms (performance, dance, play, opera, show, ritual, ceremony, happening etc.) is met by theater studies with a plurality of theatrical terms and definitions in order to do justice to specific modes of playing, interactive dynamics or social functions. To speak in general terms about "the" theater, although this is quite common in everyday language or journalistically, is not expedient in theater studies.
On the basis of texts from the last decades as well as three practical examples, students will therefore learn 1. to know and distinguish between different theater and performance terms, 2. to deal precisely with theatre-theoretical terms, 3. to read theoretical texts precisely and 4. to argue theoretically well-founded in relation to performances and different forms of theater. Overall, the proseminar aims at a competent and independent use of theoretical terms in the context of a plurality of theater definitions.
