The proseminar "Theatre Theory" provides an overview of different theoretical fields on the basis of selected key concepts. The course focuses on the critical examination of these concepts both in a historical context as well as the context of the Institute itself. It addresses the difference and affinity of terms such as 'festivity', 'ritual', 'play', 'theatre', 'staging', 'role theory', 'theatricality', etc., allowing students to recognize theatricality as an anthropological and social category. Furthermore, the proseminar will tackle theatre theory by analyzing specific aesthetic concepts developed within drama and acting theory such as mimesis, catharsis, comedy, illusion, etc. In addition, it aims to offer a theoretical reflection on the fundamental theatrical concepts such as body, space, rhythm, public sphere, appearance, presence, etc. The discussions will be held both in German and English.Goals:
Departing from the most relevant theoretical texts from the last decades as well as several practical examples, the participants will learn:
- how to distinguish between different theatre or performance terms;
- how to employ the main operational theatre-theoretical terms with accuracy;
- how to read theatre-related theoretical texts and reflect upon leading theatre terminology with understanding;
- how to draw on a range of conceptual frameworks to analyze and interpret different theatrical events.Methods:
The teaching methods used in the seminar would mostly consist of group analytical work of proposed texts and available video material of the selected relevant productions. The material would be distributed to the participants prior to the seminar, and would then be discussed during the seminar.
