Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Female Performance Artists enact themselves in their own body: Main topics in (re-)defining
themselves as women are sex, pain and hierarchical structures. They deconstruct traditional role model in floating gender roles, dealing with sexuality in a playful way and experiencing violence authentically. The body was an important stage for social change at the threshold between 19th and 20th century and for the beginning emancipation of women. Already Rosa Mayreder emphasized the relevance of the body in constructing identity; also philosophers like Judith Butler do so today. Performance Artists like VALIE EXPORT, Marina Abramovic, Carolee Schneemann, Meredith Monk and Katrina Daschner deal with these questions in their art work using various media. They embody the social discourse. By means of certain examples we analyze and discuss different ways of creative expression concerning this issue.
