Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of this course is to deepen the ability to use theatrical spaces as an analytical tool in one's own research.

This course deals with historical and contemporary formations of predominantly music-theatrical spaces, with a focus on questions of social and intercultural transfers between appropriation and agency -- especially in forms of so-called "musical entertainment" (musical, operetta, singspiel, revue, film adaptations) -- and its projections of self-images and images of others. "The Hills Are Alive" is both a diagnosis and a challenge: what, for example, is the (self-)staging of “Austria” in "The Sound of Music", which ideas of South-Eastern Europe characterize the Viennese operetta, which colonial racisms are handed down in the revue format, and how can we deal with them scenically today, against the backdrop of an international, but still Western-dominated (music) theater industry?
The methodic and didactic formats of this course will likely include individual tasks to prepare and follow-up the sessions, small group work during the sessions, readings, feedback and joint discussion as well as viewings, excursions and, where possible, guest impulses.

There will be a joint session (hybrid) on Tuesday (!) 14.01.2025, 11:00-13:30, together with the course "China and Music Theater" at the German Department, which takes place in cooperation with Chinese colleagues. This session replaces the planned course session on Thursday, 16.01.2025.

At least one theater excursion is planned ("Im Weißen Rössl", Volksoper Vienna).

Methods and examination results depend on the number of registered students and may change until the end of the deregistration phase.

Assessment and permitted materials

In this course, you will complete assignments both during the lecture period and after the lecture period. All assigments must be completed independently.

The assignments are structured as follows:
You write (handwritten) research journal entries after each session. (Upload to Moodle up to max. 24 hours after each session) - Share of the overall grade: 33%
You will take on a moderation/adopt-a-text (oral) during the semester. In addition, you will participate in the session group tasks; these require individual preparation in advance (e.g. guided readings, developing discussion questions, finding examples) - Share of the overall grade: 33%
You will develop an independent final project in a format suitable for submission. This can be everything except term papers! - The perspective/question must be academic, but the implementation can be creative/artistic/activist. Teamwork is also welcome - then the same grade applies to all participants. (examples of of possible project formats: Podcasts, comics, maps/collages, decolonial postcards (according to Kosasa/Tomita), manifestos, choreographies, film/theater projects, vlogs... The sky's the limit!)
Mandatory submission date for your finale project is 20.02.2025. - Share of the overall grade: 33%

Your course grades will be entered into u:space by 25.02.2025. Please inform me in advance if you need an earlier submission date and grading.

In addition to the assignments detailed above, it is possible to write a BA thesis (40,000 characters, +/- 10%) in this class, with a mandatory submission date of 28.02.2025. Your BA thesis will be corrected and graded by 10.03.2025.
The registration deadline for a BA thesis is 10.12.2024, with an abstract (1/2 page) and an outline.
Writing a BA thesis includes a mandatory consultation during the lecture period (online or in person). You can withdraw from a BA thesis at any time before the deadline.
The criteria set out in the handbook "Academic Work in Theater, Film and Media Studies" form the basis for the preparation and assessment of written work.

Participation in feedback formats and discussions in a manner productive for the seminar group is required.

Depending on the number of participants, these modalities may still change until the end of the deregistration period, for didactic reasons.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Attendance policy: You may miss one 4-hour units, with prior information of the course teacher.

To pass this class, all 4 assignments must be passed with a grade of at least "sufficient" (4), which includes their punctual submission. Deadlines are binding.

You will receive 5 ECTS for this course, which equals a workload of 100-125 hours total. This time budget includes attending the course, preparing for and following up on the sessions, and designing, researching and writing your final paper. Please calculate your semester hours in such a way that you do not have to drop out of the course due to lack of time.

Examination topics

This class is "prüfungsimmanent". This means that readings, preparation and follow-up tasks, and session contents as well as the content of inputs, excursions and viewings are all relevant for your exam assignments. In addition, your final papers/projects require the independent application, reflection and expansion of the course work. These components will be considered in the grading.
