Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The lecture discusses essential changes in 18th century theatre practice and theory from the point of view of the rational legitimation of a national theatre as a popular "school" against supposedly "unenlightened" forms of behaviour and theatre.
The aporias of the National Theatre idea are first explored on the discursive level in order to then present the failure or relative success of the theatre pilot projects in Leipzig, Hamburg, Vienna or Mannheim as attempts to create a "bourgeois" theatre within absolutist structures. The theatre problem becomes particularly clear in the last quarter of the 18th century in the environment of the Sturm und Drang movement, the French Revolution and the "Mainzer National-Bürgertheater", when new theatre theories, aesthetics and forms of organisation were of short-term interest, but a theatre business based on trivial plays prevailed.
