Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

During the brief period of the Weimar Republic (1918-1933), theater served as a field of social and aesthetic debate with an intensity and polyphony rarely seen before or since in the German-speaking world. From the staging of expressionist drama to the classic productions by Max Reinhardt or Leopold Jessner that formed the style of German Regietheater, from the Volksbühne movement to the Proletarian Theater and the gestural Ingolstadt plays by Marieluise Fleißer, from cabaret to revue, from the development of epic theater by Bertolt Brecht to the communist agitprop troupes of the late Republic - there is a multitude of theater forms that became the subject of public debate, in which the political forces of this attempt at democracy manifested themselves
This lecture on the theater of the Weimar Republic traces important productions, debates, innovations and problem areas and discusses historiographical and theoretical concepts that attempt to interpret them.
