In der Geschichte des österreichischen Films häufen sich Filme, die auf die eine oder andere Art und Weise mit Musik verbunden sind. Von Biopics über Komponisten, Operetten- und Opernverfilmungen bis hin zu Experimenten der Live-vertonung im Stummfilm und Revuefilme der 1930er Jahre reicht das Spektrum. Die Vorlesung stellt diese Filme in den Mittelpunt und kontextualisiert sie im Rahmen von Geschichte, Produktion und Theorie. So wird einerseits ein Einblick in die Filmgeschichte gegeben, andererseits auch der Einfluss dieser Filme auf die internationale Filmgeschichte diskutiert.
