Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this lecture series, held by staff members of the Department of Theater, Film and Media Studies, specific work projects (research and publication projects, workshops, lectures, courses, etc.) are explained in terms of the connection between key-questions, the theater, film and media phenomena selected for investigation, and the methods chosen. The term "method" can have two different meanings. On the one hand, it can refer to specific steps in the process of researching and questioning, and on the other hand, it can refer to theory-based reflection on the perspectives from which investigated phenomena can lead to insights.
The methods presented include procedures of film and performance analysis, working in archives, decolonial and intersectional approaches, discourse analysis, representation critique, dispositif analysis, and much more. A critical reflection on the concept of method can also become the subject of the course.
By making the three working processes mentioned in the title - asking questions, delimiting phenomena, conceiving research - transparent in each lecture, methodological decisions prove to be a creative challenge on the one hand, and on the other hand, students are helped to relate lecture content to their own working projects.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written exam at the end of the semester, three additional dates in early March 2023, mid-May 2023, and mid-June 2023, will be scheduled during the semester.
