Aims, contents and method of the course

This course is dealing with a complex, controversial and politically "hot" topic: crime and the fight against it. Our starting point is as simple as it is statistically easy to prove: Some people murder someone. Others do not. Whether we like it or not. One could perhaps also say: Whether they (the murderers) want to or not. In more general terms: one part of the population commits crimes, another does not. For thousands of years people have been trying to understand different aspects of the crime complex better and better. The old questions are still difficult to answer : who becomes a criminal? Why? What should one do with criminals? And, again and again, how can crime be completely eliminated to create a better world (eugenics)? A historical and perhaps future answer is that if criminals are rendered harmless BEFORE they can commit a crime, then the problem would be solved. What remains is "only" the most important question of all: Which authorities define who should be condemned as a criminal or celebrated as a hero, and for what?
Steven Spielberg's film MINORTY REPORT deals with this topic and will therefore serve as our introduction to the world of real and fictional crime, crime fighting and criminology. Despite all theoretical reflection on reality, one fundamental truth must not be forgotten: our curiosity.
Hardly any other genre is as successful as the crime and detective genre, in which murders and other crimes are the order of the day.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Derzeit sind alle Lehrveranstaltungen von Prof. Köppl auf eLearning umgestellt. KollegInnen, die für die LV angemeldet sind, sehen alle Informationen zum Inhalt, zur den Leistungen und zur Bewertung auf Moodle. KollegInnen, die von der Warteliste nachrücken, werden automatisch auf Moodle freigeschaltet und erhalten damit Zugang zu den Informationen. Alle Lehrveranstaltungen werden nach einem 1000-Punkte-System bewertet. Die geplanten Kino- und Ausstellungsbesuche sind abgesagt. Anwesenheits- und Mitarbeitspunkte werden durch kleine Aufgaben ersetzt. Anstelle von Gruppenaufgaben treten längere Einzelaufgaben. Zwischentests, so geplant, werden ebenfalls online durchgeführt. eLearning ist für die Lehrenden noch zeitintensiver als Präsenzlehre. Es ist daher nicht möglich, zusätzliche TeilnehmerInnen aufzunehmen. Es ist auch nicht möglich, Positionen auf der Warteliste zu überspringen.
