“Evil“ Clowns and their grotesque horror masks are often-quoted, widespread figures in all spheres of media and – nowadays – even everyday life. At the same time, this seemingly new phenomenon causes heavily polarized reactions between fascination, denegation and phobia. The course aims to present an overview of the paradox nature of the clown, using historic and new material, and to thereby approach present-day figurations of the „Evil“ Clowns (Joker of Batman fame, the phenomenon of the Horror Clowns around Halloween, etc.).Goals:
Approach to and understanding of the ambivalent nature of the clown and for its significance, role and relation to society, recognition of subtle correlations, development of explanations
Methods:
Analysis of a broad material from films, TV, arts, etc.; reading, discussion and work in interaction, problematization of a polarized reception of the figure, group work
