Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The conversation between P. Adams Sitney and Peter Kubelka began over 50 years ago and has continued to define, redefine, and influence new definitions of what avant-garde film is, has been, and will be. This course will examine this conversation primarily through the books 'Was ist Film' (Kubelka) and 'Visionary Film' (Sitney). We will explore the impact each figure had on American and Austrian avant-garde film history and how the relationship between Kubelka and Sitney changed the public understanding of this history.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students will be required to submit 3 short critical response papers (2 pages) films during the semester. A longer (8 - 10 pages) final research paper will be required at the end of the semester.

Attendance at special events at the Austrian Film Museum are mandatory and will be required of all enrolled students.
