Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This course explores the idealising trap of the “exotic” in contemporary performance practices. We will look at recent developments in inter- and transcultural studies, postcolonial theory and queer theory, to reflect the role of the exotic in colonial imagination and its consequences in post-colonial realities, as well as the deliberate pursuit of the exotic as artistic strategy.Theoretical discussion will evolve around studies of artistic practice and other related sources, with a particular focus on contemporary performance. Selected works will serve as case studies to how agency develops through intercultural practice and manages to enter and subvert stereotypes of post- and neocolonial identities.Among artists and artist collectives whose works will be studied are Cibelle Cavalli Bastos, Tianzhuo Chen, Mai Ling, Pichet Klunchun, Zadie Xa and Rong Xie (Echo Morgan). The seminar bibliography includes texts by Hongwei Bao, Homi Bhabha, Rey Chow, Monica Juneja, among others.
