The seminar will address dispositives in general and questions of framing as a medial technique in general and as cultural technique in particular. Foucault defines dispositives (arrangements) as networks of institutions, persons, discourses and practices that can be functionally inserted into power structures - and determine not only any general communication, but also the production and reception of artefacts. The fact that media and dispositives are inseparably linked, that dispositives not only use media, but that every medial relationship is embedded in historically and culturally determined dispositives, and that dispositives also have a medial effect, is not a new insight. In addition to illuminating the nature and function of various types of media dispositives (in theatre, art, and film, but also with regard to new media and modern as well as postmodern mass mediaity), the seminar will therefore also examine a special question: what is the relevance of framing techniques within this media dispositivity? The students acquire the competence to identify dispositives, to fathom their function and nature, and to understand the meaning of framing techniques in these contexts.
