In Sigmund Freud, whom his enemies (!) said deserved the Nobel Prize for Literature, we read the beautiful sentence: "one does not confuse the inside and the outside with no consequences" (Laienanalyse, 1926). Modern film aesthetics likes to fool us with this confusion by showing us, the viewers, the inner world of the characters (mindscreen). But this is - based on the above quotation - only one (and perhaps the simplest) idea with which psychoanalysis and film analysis can be connected. Film analysts often seem to be searching for the "inside" that is hidden behind the "outside" of the film, often examining aspects and relations that Freud describes as " condensation" and "displacement", as analogy and censorship, but also the themes of repression and negation, the aspect of "counter-sense" and the idea of cathartic letting off steam play a role in the analysis of mise-en-scène, mise-en-image and mise-en-chai(! )ne. The structure of the dream and the film can also be analyzed in the context of Freud with Jakobson's model of "selection and combnation" as well as with the "principles of magic" described by Frazer (The Golden Bough, 1922).
