Aims, contents and method of the course

Fritz Lang, Bertolt Brecht, Ernst Lubitsch, Dorothy Arzner, Walt Disney, Tarzan, Lassie, Bugs Bunny und Superman: Sie alle kämpfen im Zweiten Weltkrieg im Dienste der US-amerikanischen Filmpropaganda gegen die Nazis. Zwischen 1939 und 1945 entstehen in Hollywood ca. 180 Anti-Nazi-Spielfilme, dazu kommen dokumentarische Arbeiten und viele Animationsfilme. In dieser Lehrveranstaltung werden wir US-amerikanische Produktionen im zeitgeschichtlichen politischen und propagandistischen Zusammenhang untersuchen - dabei wird besonderes Augenmerk auf den Beitrag von Filmschaffenden gelegt, die ab 1933 vom Nationalsozialismus ins Exil vertrieben wurden.

Filmhistorische Grundkenntnisse werden vorausgesetzt (classical Hollywood cinema). Folgende Filme sollten bis zum ersten Termin auf Moodle gesichtet werden: CASABLANCA, TO BE OR NOT TO BE und HANGMEN ALSO DIE!

Im Anschluss an die beiden ersten Termine am 7. und 14. März sind ab 15 Uhr im MediaLab in der Rotunde Filmvorführungen mit weiteren Anti-Nazi-Filmen angesetzt. Bitte nehmen Sie diese Termine wahr!

Assessment and permitted materials

Anwesenheit (unbedingt beim ersten Termin, maximal zwei Absenzen), diverse Zwischenleistungen, Präsentation, Abschlussarbeit.
