Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course will focus on "performance on the fringes" for survival purposes. From an historical perspective, we will examine the variety of theatrical forms, which came into being as survival strategies during periods of existential catastrophes. This will include the fields of circus, street performance, as well as forms of performance in the death camps of the Nazi era, etc. This historical perspective should provide a basis for the investigation of contemporary performative survival strategies of refugees and people who are fleeing from catastrophic situations. In the scope of this course, preparations will be made for the conference: This conference will be held with and for current refugees and will take place at the end of October 2017 in Vienna. Work groups will be formed to set up various panels; workshop concepts; organization; guest reception; press coverage; PR and communication. An historical-critical guided tour through Vienna's city center will be an integral part of the conference. The conference will be documented and published bilingually. This course and the conference will both be held in English and German.
