How do you come up with the idea of becoming a (cultural) scientist or artist? What seems to be a straight path for some is a winding path for others, often related to the family background and resources one has. Social class can also be intertwined with the experience of gender hierarchies, racism and other factors that influence one's life path. Which (artistic and theoretical) methods make it possible to move from social grievances and personal experiences to political criticism without manifesting and essentializing them in order to open up spaces (for one's own thinking and actions) and make social hierarchies negotiable? Coming from a less privileged background can enrich one's own view of society and often creates art and cultural studies works with subversive potential - and humor.
The focus of this seminar is on works of video and performance art.

Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The artistic works inspire the analysis of the scientific texts and provide possible interpretations for a contextualization of the questions raised in the texts. This involves an analysis of both the text and the work - which includes aspects of content, aesthetics and form. The seminar offers an interdisciplinary interface between film, video, performance, conceptual art and cultural studies.

Assessment and permitted materials

Input presentation in the seminar and research on an artistic work and/or a cultural studies text (70 %). Active participation in the discussions in the seminar and in the form of writing exercises (30 %).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The delivery of an input presentation and the timely submission of a written outline of the input, as well as of the writing exercises guided during the seminar, is necessary for a very good grade.

Examination topics

Description of artistic and cultural studies strategies to reveal and question hierarchies asserted by classism, racism and sexism.
