Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The lecture discusses (in view of contemporary philosophical debates) the collapse of Hegels syntheses in 19th century philosophy. Karl Löwiths book From Hegel to Nietzsche is used in presenting the historical developments. In part 1 of the lecture, Feuerbachs post-Hegelian critique of religion is re-evaluated in view of, i.a., Charles Taylors and Marcel Gauchets analyses of the postmodern phenomenon of a religious after religion. The complex, Hegel-inspired social theory of Marx will be read in light of texts by Derrida, Cornel West, and Piketty. Kierkegaards criticism of the bourgeois self will be examined in its influence on existential philosophy, on Wittgenstein, and on post-analytic thought (Cavell). Finallly, Nietzsches dictum that God is dead will be re-evaluated in light of recent theories of modernity (Habermas, Pippin, Taylor).
