Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The title of the lecture, which is intentionally in line with the title of Karl Löwith’s famous book about the revolutionary disruption in 19th-century philosophy, will give an overview of important stages and problems of philosophy at that time. Beginning with Hegel’s thoughts on history and the division of his philosophy in a right and a left wing, the emphasis will later mainly move towards Karl Marx, Sören Kierkegaard, Arthur Schopenhauer, Friedrich Nietzsche and Georg Simmel. Further it will be shown how the realignment of philosophy took place within the historical constellations of the 19th century after the collapse of systematic Idealism as a predominant school of thought and which consequences these changes towards a focus on the human, existence, practical issues and power relations had for the self-reference of the modern era.
The aim of this course is to provide basic knowledge of the history of 19th-century philosophy considering it beeing part of the Teacher Training Programm of Psychology and Philosophy and taking into account practical issues of teaching at school.
