Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar offers an introduction into the problem of poverty from a philosophical perspective with particular reference to the current debate on global justice.
The seminar begins with an introduction to different conceptions of poverty. Positions from social sciences and relevant documents of international policy are discussed. At the end of the first section, the main question has to be answered: What is poverty and and what is a human minimum?
The second section of the seminar asks whether poverty is a relevant problem for philosophy and if so, why? In this context, various approaches to global justice, where questions of poverty usually play a central role in the discussion, will be introduced and discussed – mainly from an intercultural perspective. In addition to the currently influential texts of Thomas Pogge, Martha Nussbaum and Amartya Sen, are the concepts of the Latin-American philosopher Enrique Dussel and the African philosophers Odera Oruka and Kwame A. Appiah in the focus of the seminar. Ultimately, the question is: Can the problem of global justice be approached in an intercultural way only?
