Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In the opening sequence of the lecture the new interest, in contemporary philosophy, in American pragmatism (an interest which is generated by the crisis of analytic philosophy, as well as by critical re-readings of deconstruction) is sketched. In the main part of the lecture core texts of the classical American pragmatists (Peirce, James, Royce, Mead, and Dewey) will be presented and analyzed (i.a. in view of epistemological problems). Further emphasis will be placed on pragmatic ethics and theory of democracy, as well as on the discourse on religion in pragmatism. Part 3 of the lecture is dedicated to Richard Rorty and Hilary Putnam, the two most prominent neo-pragmatist, and casts a glance at recent debates of (neo-)pragmatism in Russell B. Goodman, Nancy Frazer, Robert Brandom, and Cheryl Misak.
