Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course serves an an introduction to Bernard Williams’ ethical thought by way of his early book MORALITY. We will also be reading and discuss sections of MORAL LUCK.

Assessment and permitted materials

Regular attendance, regular timely upload of homework (two days prior to class), an optional presentation, and your lively participation in class-discussions.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

In order to attain a positive grade you will have to hand in eight short papers (excerpts and commentaries). If you give a presentation on one of the topics/chapters under discussion, the number of excerpts you will have to write is reduced to six. Presentations can be given as pre-recorded video-or audio-podcasts or in person during our sessions. Attendance is mandatory, you may miss two course units. You will be graded on each part of your contributions to class, your papers amount to 70 per cent of your final grade, 30 per cent are based on your participation in in-class discussions.

Examination topics

This is a course with continuous assessment. There is no final exam.

Williams, Bernard: Morality. An Introduction to Ethics. Cambridge University Press.
(Additional essays by Williams and secondary literature will be provided via Moodle.)
