Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Is the received opinion that philosophy of history has become obsolete well founded? Examining this issue, the lecture discusses, i.a., the following topics: The difference between historical research and philosophy; the tension between narrativity and action; the distinction between formal and substantial philosophy of history; the conception of history as a whole, philosophy of history as interpretation of the presence and contribution to overcoming contingency; conceptions of the ultimate end of history in Rousseau, Kant and Hegel; Benjamin, Adorno and Arendt as critics of historical progress.
Assessment and permitted materials
Written exam (90 minutes); no written or electronic materials permitted.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
In order to pass the exam, four essays need to be written: two on the issues discussed in the lecture, two on the obligatory literature. (There will be a choice of questions.)
Examination topics
The issues discussed in the lecture plus two obligatory texts (that can be selected from a list of five).
Reading list
General introductions, literature discussed in the lecture, and five obligatory texts will be made available in the library of the department of philosophy at the beginning of the term.
