will first look at classical Confucian works from the Warring States
Period (principally the Analects, Xiaojing, Zhongyong, Mencius, Xunzi)
before moving on to examine contemporary approaches to the classical
Confucian works by thinkers like Tu Weiming, Roger Ames, Bryan Van Norden,
and Li Zehou encompassing pragmatism, role ethics, virtue ethics, and
Marxist thought. Students will be graded on the basis of class
participation (10%), informal presentations as assigned (20%), one
1500-2000 word paper dealing with the classical texts (30%), and a
2500-3000 second paper dealing with contemporary approaches (40%).
