Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In his most recent book "Strange Tools", Alva Noë denies that painting is some kind of picture making, ballet is a kind of dance, and poetry some kind of narrative. Art is construed as a reflection or reshaping of the first-order activity of dancing, picture-making, singing. It is, just like philosophy, a critical activity. In that sense, philosophy stands to reasoning, argument and science in the same relation that the art of painting stands to picture-making.

In the course of the seminar, students will read and discuss "Strange Tools" chapter by chapter, but will also be made familiar with Noë's philosophy more generally so as to embed the topic into a broader context.
