Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Languages of instruction: German/English. Excursion in Ko-operation with Volkstheater Wien
The lecture aims to analyze the concept of "Three Ecologies" (3Ecologies, 3E's) from a cross-cultural perspective and to investigate it with philosophical and artistic research methods (arts-based-philosophy).
In the first lecture units, we will analyze Félix Guattari's concept of 3E's in general. A concept, in which he assumes that a comprehensively conceived ecological movement has to include an environmental, a socio-political and a mental ecological dimension. Especially with regard to the necessity of a mental ecological dimension, we will bring into play concepts of non-European (Indian) philosophies in order to push the discourse on 3 E's beyond the limits of Euro-centric discourses.
In the second, third, and fourth lecture blocks, the three dimensions of an environmental ecology, a social ecology, and a mental ecology will each be analyzed individually from a cross-cultural perspective, focusing on works by Félix Guattari, Gilles Deleuze, Abhinavagupta, Erin Manning, Brian Massumi, Karen Barad, Dipesh Chakrabarty, and Jean-Luc Nancy, as well as the Tantric Trika School of Kashmir Shaivism as a whole.

5 lecture units will be excursions. They will take place at ROTE BAR Volkstheater Wien. The artists Claudia Bosse (Theaterkombinat), Nikolaus Gansterer (Artistic-Research), Brigitte Wilfing (dancer, performer, choreographer), the actress Susanne Valerie Granzer and the media philosopher Soumyabrata Choudhury (Jawaharwal Nehru University Delhi) will be invited as guests there to share their ideas about Guattari's Three Ecologies with us. All of them have been working artistically and philosophically for many years on an environmental-ecological, a social-ecological and a mental-ecological turnaround.
