This seminar will examine the philosophical case made against/for Richard Wagner by Theodor W. Adorno, Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe, Slavoj Zizek, and Alain Badiou. Particular emphasis will be put on the ways in which Adorno's critique critique re-appears in the thought of Lacoue-Labarthe, Zizek, and Badiou.

Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

All texts for the seminar will be made available in form of a reader. The reader will consist of relevant texts by Adorno, Lacoue-Labarthe, Zizek, and Badiou on Richard Wagner.

Assessment and permitted materials

In order to receive a grade for the seminar, either a presentation (40-45 minutes) has to be given or a paper (20 pages; 1 1/2 spaces) has to be written. The topic of the paper has to be determined in cooperation with the instructor.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The seminar will employ close readings; it will also give ample opportunity to students to hone their presentation and writing skills.

The seminar will consist of presentations and class discussions

Reading list

The seminar participants will perform close readings of seminal texts by Adorno, Lacoue-Labarthe, Zizek, and Badiou. More details about the specific texts will be given during the preliminary meeting.
