The seminar deals with the question of how to successfully incorporate these sensitive and often challenging topics into the classroom. Thus, the taboo subject of "suicide" and "death" will be treated reflexively and discursively. Psychological (Ringel, Sonneck), philosophical (stoicism, existentialism) and ethical aspects of the topic are adressed. The question of what is considered "healthy" and what is considered "ill" in our society is also explored. Mental illnesses (e.g.: schizophrenia and emotionally unstable personality disorder) are presented as examples, and philosophical aspects of mental illness (e.g.: the mind-body problem) are also examined. Among others, positive psychology (Seligman) and existential analysis (Frankl) will also be covered as a counterpoint to these challenging topics.
In the practical part, students will plan lessons in their peer groups using appropriate text sources and methods, which they will then present in plenary at the end of the seminar. The subsequent feedback can then be incorporated before giving.
