Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This seminar deals with the practical questions of animal ethics and human-animal interaction. The central question is not, how we can theoretically account for an ethical treatment of animals but how ethical claims are being transferred to practice and implemented. Problems and challenges will become visible when dealing with the actual situation of farm animals, laboratory animals, zoo animals, wild animals and companion animals. The seminar will address questions of killing and eating animals from an ethical point of view (Farm animals meat production / Laboratory animals animal experimentation / Wild animals species and wildlife conservation) and questions beyond the problem of killing: Ethical problems in farm animal husbandry / Ethical problems in laboratory animal husbandry / Ethical problems in zoo animal husbandry / Ethical problems in pet husbandry and pet trade).

Assessment and permitted materials

Course assessment: "Prüfungsimmanente Lehrveranstaltung": continuous participation is mandatory. A detailed list of papers which the students have to read in advance of each class will be handed to them in the first session.
Students have to give an oral presentation (20-30 min.) and write a paper (12 pages). Alternatively, they can give an oral presentation (20-30 min.), write a shorter essay (6 pages) and facilitate one of the discussions in class (discussant). Being a discussant means: you are well prepared for the discussion, you have spoken with the students giving the presentation, thus you know, what they will present, and you have prepared some interesting questions for the audience. The result should be a structured debate.
Submission of the papers and essays: at the latest until 6. September 2013.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The seminar aims to discuss topical problems in human-animal interaction. Clearly, the discussed issues pose challenges to all humans dealing and working with animals, be they veterinarians, zoo managers and keepers, laboratory staff, livestock and pet owners, conservationists, activists or politicians. The master students shall gain insight into these discussions and strengthen their own ethical arguments.

Examination topics

Presentations by lecturer, presentations by participants, discussions (based on presentations, reading, and movie).
