Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
I. PREREQUISITES
̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅
▹It is a prerequisite that students are willing and able to participate in discussions in English.
Reason: The seminar takes place in English, the reading materials are English texts as well.▹ Students must be able and willing to engage with texts from contemporary analytic philosophy.
Reason: The literature that we will read is analytic philosophy. A sympathy for that philosophical tradition is necessary for enjoying the class, and we want our participants to enjoy the class.▹ Students must have solid competence with elementary logic
Reason: Some of the texts presuppose acquaintance with formal methods of philosophy (as they are taught, e.g., in an introduction to logic). In order to fruitfully engage with the literature one should bring good competences in elementary logic (having obtained the grade 2 or better in the introduction to logic is highly recommendable).II. OBLIGATORY CLASS WORK
̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅
▹ Attendance is required; unexcused absence is permitted twice.
▹ Sessions have to prepared by answering a set of questions on the literature (5 times during the semester).
▹ Participants must be willing to write a draft of the term paper by the beginning of July. The paper will then be commented on by two "referees" (i.e. by another student of the course and by a teacher).
▹ The final subission of the term paper must take the comments of the referees into account (a supporting letter must be submitted that explains how this was done, or explains why certain comments were not taken into account, e.g. because they were based on a misunderstanding).III. CONDITIONS FOR PASSING
̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅
In order to pass the overall exam, a student must▹ have a positive grade in every component of the exam, and
▹ have done the obligatory class work.

Language and world are tied together in manifold ways. Language aims at a correct representation of the world; in turn, the world makes statements true or false. This seminar explores some traditional views on the nature of language, the nature of the world, and on the connection between the two. The literature used comprises some modern classics from analytic philosophy.II. GOALS
̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅
We intend the participants of the class▹ to have fun with the topics and papers, both on their own and in cooperation with the rest of the class
▹ to learn about a (smallish) selection of core topics in the philosophy of language and metaphysics
▹ to acquire the background knowledge needed to attend the summer school (Q: Which summer school? A: See below.)III. SUMMER SCHOOL
̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅ ̅
Apart from introducing the students to a selection of important philosophical topics in the philosophy of language and world, the seminar additionally serves a preparatory function for a summer school. Here are its core data:▹ WHO? Prof. Matti Eklund, from the lovely town of Uppsala (https://www.katalog.uu.se/profile/?id=N13-1343).
▹ WHAT? Alien Languages and Alien Metapysics (a fancy topic that Eklund is currently working on).
▹ WHEN? The week from the 24th to the 28th of July.
▹ WHERE? Here in Vienna.(For a fuller description, see here: https://hamburgersommerkurs.wordpress.com/about/. See also: https://www.filosofi.uu.se/research/research-projects/alien-structure/)While participants of the seminar are not obligated to attend the summer school, it is an ideal combination: In class we read about classical views in the philosophy of language and metaphysics. In the summer school, the literature from the class will serve as a foil for the alien ideas that Eklund will explore.(For the participation in the summer school, you can get extra Credit Points for the MA, to be used in the module M04. More details will follow on moodle and in class.)
