Aims, contents and method of the course

The lecture is a synopsis of the philosophical foundations, problems, and implications of the biolocal sciences. It deals with the following topics: The Position of biology in the natural sciences / Biology and natural history /Observation, description, comparison, claddification / Types of biological explanation / What is life? / The theory of Evolution: the central theory of the biological sciences / Determination and chance / Evolution and the view of humans: Humans and animals - humans as animals? / Brain and mind / Free will - just an Illusion? /Modern biology and the meaning of life / Biology and its contribution to enlightenment
