Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The relation between the public and the private and thus of the realm of the political is dependent from the social negotiation against the background of the media-shaped conditions of communication. Especially political communication is dependent on the (mass-)media available. At first through radio and TV and later through the diverse means of communication in the internet, the delimitation between public and private as well as the form of communication and the form of politics has changed. The seminar explores the transformation of public communication through the use of new (mass-)media and the resulting political changes.
The seminar will proceed in three steps: In the first step, the seminar will explore the concept of the political public sphere and its different definitions and functions. The social and medial parameters of "the public" will be of special interest. In a second step, the different theories of of the public sphere will be discussed from a perspective of the philosophy of media with regard to their understanding of (the function of) media and their implication on political theory. Finally, in a third step, the question about the medial aspects of the realm of the political will be assesed from the private/public distinction.
