Aims, contents and method of the course

The theory of evolution is the central theory in the life sciences. Moreover - and consequently - it plays its role in different other disciplines (psychology, cultural and social sciences) and has significant philosophical implications. This lecture is a survey of the theory, its history, structure of argumentation and philosophical implications. Particularly, it deals with evolutionary thinking in the context of a naturalistic world view. The following topics are included: What is evolution ?/ Evolution contra creation / Evidence for evolution / From static to dynamic world view / The forerunnerrs of Darwin / The Darwinian revolution / Darwin's theories / "Darwinistic" misconceptions / Darwin and beyond / Evolution: Chance and necessity / The evolutionary conception of humanity / Knowledge, morality, freedom: Philosophical problems in the focus of evolutionary theory
