Aims, contents and method of the course

Aristotle has a very distinct theory of change, which is very central in his philosophy and permeates works like the Physics, the Metaphysics, and On Generation and Corruption. Roughly speaking, Aristotle distinguishes three ingredients or elements in every change, an underlying subject, a form, and a lack of that form, privation (e.g. a piece of bronze becomes statue -losing its original form, or a man with no musical knowledge becomes musical). Aristotle denies then that change cannot be known and cannot be accounted for, as Parmenides claimed. In the seminar we will study closely parts of the Physics and the On generation and corruption.

There will be no exam. The course will be examined with coursework.

Reading list

Literature will be given shortly. Students are invited to study Physics book I.
