Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this seminar we will discuss contemporary problems of Indian Philosophies from three perspectives.
Fristly we will examine the question, prominently posed by Chakrabarty (2000), how the relation of postcolonial India to modernity can be conceived? Do we have to consider the global call to modernize "pre-modern" societies (such as India) as a modern myth, narrated to colonaize pre-modern societies by subjecting them under the logic of a so-called universal history, or do we have to accept this global world history being indeed part of a emancipatory world history?
Secondly we would like to investigate these questions by virtue of a critical analysize of hindu-national Movements in India (Hindutva) which combine pre-modern and modern narratives. We will ask which pre-modern society and which modern society they are recalling.
Thirdly we will read the poet-philosopher Sri Aurobindo Ghose who reflects these political questions of contemporary India in a philosophical manner in his Integral Yoga.
