Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course will examine the last period of Dilthey’s philosophy, in which the concept of life gets the key concept of his Critique of Historical Reason. It is guided by three main questions: Firstly we will analyse the term life, which is elaborated by Dilthey and structures his thinking. Secondly we will examine Dilthey’s concept of knowledge, which is developed by the integration of knowledge in life. Dilthey situates the cognitive subject in the historical and societal world and understands it not only as a thinking but also as a sensitive and willing being. His epistemological position is characterised by the attempt to overcome the separation of spirit and body by the paradigm of life. This transformation of epistemology leads to a new definition, what philosophy is. Thirdly we will investigate the scientific consequences of Dilthey’s life philosophical approach. Because of the attempt to renew philosophy, its relation to the empirical sciences changes. We will discuss not only Dilthey’s transformation of philosophy, but also his definition of human sciences in general and their relation to the natural sciences.

Assessment and permitted materials

The assessment of this course has three components: a) class participation; b) paper presentation or report of one session; c) essay (10-15 pages; Arial 11; one and a half spaced) on a topic or a text, which we discuss in the course

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The last decades of the 19th century were characterised by the dominance of the natural sciences, which enlarged their epistemic claims upon fields like psychology and history. This development caused a crisis of the human sciences. Different philosophical movements reacted with the attempt to deduce the methodical autonomy of the human sciences from the peculiarity of its objects (for example neo-Kantianism, vitalism, phenomenology).
Dilthey’s humanistic hermeneutics is an ambitious attempt to found the human sciences epistemologically, logically and methodically. His philosophical examination of the natural sciences centres one of their most important concepts: life. An aim of the course is to show, how Dilthey develops a general theory of knowledge and a new concept of science. Therefore the course is also an introduction in his theory of knowledge and science. In addition, the students will gain insight into the main features of Dilthey’s method, the humanistic hermeneutics.
Finally, the course wants to make the students familiar with the principles of the critical analysing of texts and sharpen their awareness of the historical contingency of philosophical theories. The students should learn that systematic and historical thinking can complement each other an interaction, for which Dilthey’s philosophy is one of the best examples.

Examination topics

In the first session, the instructor will sketch the culture-historical background and general foundations of Dilthey’s philosophy as well as introduce the methodical principles of the critical analysing of texts. Afterwards we will acquire the problems and answers of Dilthey’s humanistic hermeneutics by common reading and discussing selected texts. We will discuss one text in every session. The text should be presented by students. The presentation should name the essential questions and analyse the main argument of the text. It will be the basis for the following general debate. Every session should be reported by one or more participants. These reports will be made available on moodle. A final discussion is planed for the last session.
