Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The module examines the unity of Kant's philosophical method in the three main areas of his system:

• theoretical philosophy (that is, epistemology and metaphysics),
• practical philosophy (i.e., moral and political philosophy), and
• teleology (in particular, philosophy of art)

Although recent Kantian scholarship has continued the detailed study of Kant's classical texts and although new areas of Kant's philosophy have recently been explored, the question of the methodological unity and contemporary relevance of Kant's system is still being explored. The module will mainly focus on Kant's three Critiques and will examine the systematic unity of Kant’s transcendental philosophy.

Assessment and permitted materials

2 x 2000-2500-word essays
- first essay due after Christmas
- second essay due at the end of the first semester

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The course aims to introduce students to the systematic unity of Kant’s transcendental philosophy and to provide them with the conceptual resources necessary for a critical evaluation of the links between Kant’s theoretical, practical and teleological philosophies.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
On completion of this unit successful students will be able to:
- demonstrate detailed knowledge of the relation, in Kant, between theoretical philosophy, practical philosophy and teleology;
- identify some of the problems raised by Kant’s claims to systematic unity;
- articulate their own views on some of the most important problems.

Examination topics

90-minute meetings, where small lectures are combined with group discussion, brief questions & answers sessions, and exercises.
