Aims, contents and method of the course

In this seminar we will study Alva Noe's 2004 book 'Action in Perception'. The focus will be on a close reading of this book and some relevant papers. Noe's book is particularly interesting to those interested in the following topics/questions:
- embodied (or extended) cognition
- is perception a process in the brain?
- is perception always cognitive? I.e. does perception always require the possesion/use of concepts?
- phenomenology

Assessment and permitted materials

Participation in class, presentations, one longer essay (ca. 15 pages) or 2 shorter essay (each ca. 8 pages)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

A good grasp of the main tenets of the book and the arguments in favour of and against them; familiarity with the thesis of embodied cognition and its role in the philosophy of mind/psychology; familiarity with the conceptualism debate in the philosophy of mind
