Mencius (372 B.C. - 289 B.C.) and Hsün tse (315B.C. - 235 B.C.) gave a better argumentative foundation to the concepts developed by Confucius arguing in a more systematic way. Studying their different views of the question whether the original nature of man is good or bad the bases of Confucianism can be worked out more clearly.
Mencius approaches to the concept of democracy, Hsün tse gives attention to the role of the ruler as an educator of the people.
The main purpose of this seminar is to work out the methodical foundation of the Confucian way of thinking. It shall be demonstrated that this text contains a line of thought of highest philosophical quality, which is worth wile to be compared with the best texts of our tradition in the past and present time.

In this seminar the texts have to be transmitted by the head of the lecture via email, because the text of Mencius in the translation of Richard Wilhelm is available only in the form of an e-book. The text of Hsün tse exists only in an English translation by Burton Watson and is not available any more.
Knowledge of the Chinese language is not necessary for the participation of the seminar.
