Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Update 22/11/21: As anticipated, the seminar will temporarily (until 12/12/21) move online. Details on Moodle.

Covid-19: This seminar is currently being planned as an in-person-seminar. But of course the mode of operation may need to be adjusted in line with pandemic-related restrictions.

In this MA-level seminar, we will be studying and discussing seminal papers on the meaning of definite and indefinite descriptions. The programme will cover classics like Russell's "On Denoting" (1905), Strawson's "On Referring" (1950), Irene Heim's Dissertation (1982) and Stephen Neal's work. A detailed list of texts covered will be made available at the beginning of the semester.

Participants will be expected to prepare each session by studying the assigned text, answering questions on that text and uploading these answers on Moodle, so that, after the deadline, everyone can compare each other's answers.

In each session, some students will moderate the discussion. We will go through the texts in detail.

At the end of the Semester, a short essay will be due.

Assessment and permitted materials

Assessment is in three components: class preparations, presentation, short essay.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Minimal requirements for passing: Regular attendance, at least grade 4 for the course (Class preparations, presentation, short essay).
The final grade is the weighted average of the grades for the three components: class preparations (20%), presentation (20%), essay (60%).

Examination topics

The texts and topics of the seminar.

Reading list

Texts will be made available at the beginning of the Semester via Moodle. Those keen on doing some early background reading should try Stephen Neale's book Descriptions (1990, MIT-Press).
