Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In recent decades the debate on philosophy of literature has gained – especially among analytic philosophers – momentum, as the increasing number of recent introductions, readers and handbooks shows. The contributions to the field discuss very often apply philosophical problems on text of fictional literature or analyze the phenomenon of literature (or fiction) from a very abstract, philosophical perspective.
In this course we will discuss several contributions to this debate, focusing on the following questions: Do literary texts refer to the actual world? Waht is the role of the author(s), what that of the readers of literature? What are the peculiarities of language in literary texts? What is the ontological status of fictional entities? What is the moral, what the cognitive value of literature?
The course is a seminar that provides ample space for discussion.

Assessment and permitted materials

Apart from the active participation in the discussions in class, the exam consists in two parts:
(1) Either a presentation or five short "preparations" (max. 1 page), in which the central thesis of a text discussed in class is summarized.
(2) A short paper, in which one of the topics discussed in class is presented and discussed.
