The central question of the Critique of Pure Reason is: How are synthetic judgments a priori possible? On page 19 of the Introduction to the second edition of the Critique (first edition: A = 1781, second edition: B = 1787), Kant writes: "One has already gained a great deal if one can bring a multitude of investigations under the formula of a single problem". Kant holds that it depends on that somewhat technically formulated task whether “metaphysics now stands or falls”. Kant argues that the old metaphysics is dead. The Critique of Pure Reason presents a completely new theory of objectivity, which – as we can easily observe today – has influenced and changed the history of philosophy as no other philosophy has done.
In this course, we will discuss the background, structure and central theses of the Critique of Pure Reason. It is expected that all participants have a critical edition of the book (in German).
