Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of this lecture Course is to offer a detailed introduction into Beauvoir's philosophy where the focus is on her concepts of freedom and recognition and their impact on a philosophy of gender. At the same time the importance of philosophy for feminist theory as a whole will be emphasized. The structure of the lecture course follows the development of Beauvoir's work from her earlier writings up to The Second Sex also including her late study on Old Age and her autobiographies.
Didactics:
Die Lehrveranstaltung wird zweisprachig geführt.
In the lecture course I shall mainly follow the chapters of my book Freedom and Recognition in the Work of Simone the Beauvoir and of my book Freiheit und Anerkennung bei Simone de Beauvoir written in German. At the beginning of the lecture I shall give a short overview and introduction into the complex of problems. At the end of each lecture we shall have time for discussions in English or German.
For certification a test in written form will be held at the end of the semester in English or German.
